Three reasons Brandon Johnson is the better progressive candidate for mayor.

As a public school teacher, union organizer, and Cook County commissioner, Brandon Johnson is the only candidate for mayor who has been on the frontlines of the fights for fully funded public schools, affordable housing, green jobs, and access to mental health care. As mayor, he will advance bold solutions to address the root causes of violence and poverty.

Here are three reasons we know Brandon Johnson is the better progressive candidate for mayor:

  1. Last time Chicago’s progressive voters sent Chuy Garcia to the mayoral runoff, we lost. It wasn’t the first time Garcia lost an important election. Brandon Johnson made it to the County Board by beating an entrenched incumbent in a 300,000 person district that encompasses Chicago’s West Side and suburban Oak Park. Brandon knows how to bring people together and win. Brandon is the strongest candidate progressive voters can send to the mayoral runoff.
  1. Brandon is the only leading candidate for mayor that has committed to enact (a) the Treatment Not Trauma proposal to reopen public mental health clinics shuttered by Rahm and use them as community-based anchors for a network of mental health first responders, and (b) the Bring Chicago Home proposal to create a dedicated revenue stream to provide our homeless neighbors with housing and services. These progressive policy proposals have the support of experts and grassroots community organizations. Chicago needs a mayor who will work to enact these progressive policy proposals, which are critical to helping our neighbors in need.
  1. Brandon has earned the endorsement of our city’s leading progressive elected officials and organizations and traditional Democrats from across Chicago, including Council Budget Committee Chair Pat Dowell. Brandon’s city-wide, racially and ideologically diverse coalition is exactly what’s needed to win, deliver on progressive policy, and govern our city effectively.

United Neighbors of the 35th Ward is an independent political organization founded by a diverse group of 35th Ward residents in 2015. We work to amplify the voices of our ward’s families, hold our elected officials accountable, and serve as a counterbalance to entrenched and powerful special interests. All ward residents are invited to join our grassroots, democratic organization.

After vetting all of the mayoral candidates, our members voted to endorse Brandon Johnson for mayor because we believe he best represents our communities’ values and is best situated to deliver for Chicago’s families, particularly those most in need.
