Statement of Solidarity with Dill Pickle Worker’s Union

United Neighbors of the 35th Wards stands in solidarity with the Dill Pickle Worker’s Union in their fight for recognition and a more just workplace. With the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the essential job of providing a community with food has resulted in grocery workers taking on life-threatening risks. The Dill Pickle’s workers have demanded fair treatment and compensation by organizing with the Industrial Workers of the World, and their demands must be acknowledged and met by management in order to live up to the organization’s stated values.

Given the co-op’s recent temporary closure due to health code issues, it is more important than ever for Dill Pickle management to come to the negotiating table and provide a safe environment for their workers. Our community deserves a healthy place for its neighbors to shop and work.

The health of a workplace extends beyond the physical environment. Reports of discriminatory actions towards workers are disconcerting and must be addressed. If an internal investigation has been conducted, the details and summary of that investigation should be made available to union leadership to facilitate a healthy discussion of perceived issues.

United Neighbors of the 35th Ward supports Dill Pickle Co-Op workers in their struggle, and we applaud their efforts to unionize. We encourage our own members who may be co-op member-owners to sign this petition to Dill Pickle Board of Directors in support of the union. We recognize that the strength in unions anywhere supports the strength of workers everywhere.

In solidarity,

United Neighbors of the 35th Ward
