Recap and Next Steps from November 19th Immigration Meeting

Our November meeting was full of information and included clear next steps for supporting our immigrant neighbors, regardless of their documentation status.

Ald. Carlos Rosa gave a presentation on the most damaging and common myths about immigrants, including an analysis of how they shape and are the result of our policies. Click here to read more.

Additionally, he is working on specific policy recommendations that Chicago and the state of Illinois can take to more effectively protect immigrants during a Trump administration.

Representatives from Latino Union and Organized Communities Against Deportation (OCAD) and Fellowship for Filipino Migrants gave updates on their work and suggested ways for attendees to help.

Latino Union seeks to protect immigration raid targets

img_2380The Latino Union of Chicago is asking for help protecting individuals and groups who could be targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A recent raid by ICE against a group of day laborers gathered at Belmont and Milwaukee Avenues included the use of mobile fingerprint scanners (which is a violation of the Fourth Amendment’s unreasonable search clause).

While there are a number of areas across the city, the Union stresses that the following seven sites are potentially dangerous for those worried about immigration enforcement

  • Pulaski – from Lawrence to Foster
  • Addison/Kimball (Home Depot)
  • Belmont/Milwaukee (gas station)
  • Armitage/Cicero (Home Depot)
  • Cicero/24th St (Home Depot)
  • Western/47th St (Home Depot)
  • 87th/Dan Ryan Expressway

Anyone witnessing illegal activity by ICE personnel is asked to immediately call (312) 491-9044.

OCAD to assist those at risk of deportation

Organized Communities Against Deportation (OCAD) is offering legal assistance to those facing deportation and advocating for the rights of all immigrants. OCAD frequently organizes events and circulates petitions.
